If you’re reading this, you’re probably in the midst of the sleep training dilemma, wondering which method is best for your little one. The good news is, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to sleep training. As a sleep consultant and registered nurse, I understand that every family is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. That’s why I’m here to break down some of the most popular sleep training methods, along with their pros and cons, to help you make an informed decision.

Ferber Method
Let’s start with my personal favorite, the Ferber method. This method, also known as graduated extinction, involves gradually increasing the amount of time you wait before responding to your child’s cries during bedtime. While this method can be effective in teaching your child to self-soothe and fall asleep independently, some parents may find it difficult to listen to their child cry. I understand how difficult it can be to hear your baby cry, even if it’s just for a little bit. That’s why I offer a Premium Support’ plan that includes texting with you throughout the entire sleep training process. This allows me to assess your baby’s behavior, cries, and safety, making the whole experience easier and more manageable for you and your baby.
Cry It Out (Extinction)
Cry It Out, or extinction, is another method where you allow your child to cry for a specified period without any intervention. While this method can lead to quick results, it can be emotionally challenging for both parents and children.
Chair Method
The chair method involves sitting in a chair next to your child’s crib or bed until they fall asleep, gradually moving the chair further away over time. This method can provide comfort and reassurance to your child while still encouraging them to fall asleep on their own. This method is not as effective with older children.
Pick-Up/Put-Down Method
This method involves picking up your child when they cry and putting them back down once they have calmed down, repeating as necessary until they fall asleep. While this method can be comforting for your child, it can also be physically demanding for parents.
Consistency is Key
Regardless of which method you choose, consistency is key. Establishing a bedtime routine and sticking to it can help your child feel secure and comfortable, making the sleep training process smoother for everyone involved.
